Personalities Arrive in Havana for Fidel’s Birthday Celebration

Brazilian poet Thiago de Mello was among the guests arriving Sunday in the Cuban capital to participate in the celebration for Fidel Castro’s 80th birthday, organized by the Guayasamin Foundation, reported the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

More than 1,500 personalities from 76 countries are expected for the much anticipated event that includes concerts and conferences.

Also arriving on Sunday were Italian Gino Done, who was involved in Mexico in the expeditionary group that led by Fidel Castro traveled to eastern Cuba on board the Granma yacht back in 1956, and Marcelio dos Santos, a member of the Central Committee of the ruling FRELIMO party of Mozambique.

Other personalities already in Cuba were Nayef Hawatmeh, general secretary of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and Tomas Borge, of the Sandinista National Liberation Front leadership.

On Saturday Ecuadorian writer Jorge Enrique Adoum arrived in Havana.

Children of the late Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamin and staff of the Guayasamin foundation are in Havana preparing an exhibit titled "An Embrace from Guayasamin to Fidel," the colloquium "Memory and Future: Cuba and Fidel," and the "All Voices" concert set to take place between November 28 and December 1.
