The resistant cedar to the laws of nature

from Zeina Fayad - 05.07.2006 16:30

Once upon a time, there was a rebellious stubborn young cedar. In the Barouk Cedar forest, up over the mountains, the bark ripens, and the resin smells at times. The beasts go live, the fruits tingle as if they flew in the branches, and the fungus grips on rocks. Laws spread over by old Mother Nature prevail, and appeasing feelings come from this reunion.

One morning, through that serene magic, the Elements of Nature: Earth, Skies, Sun and Water turning to wind, deciphered in the early dew, the announcement of a storm over the tree land. While the trees still had the sun in their branches, the young cedars sensed a touch of frost coming slyly from some heavy dark clouds hidden in the blue sky . Usually, cedars have answers for frost. They know how to protect themselves against the snow and keep their foliage greenish, all over the year.

- “ We’re pretty sure there’s something wrong going on”, started the young fat Disobedient cedar, called “Bouncy” by his tree-mates.

The young fat Disobedient cedar seeking for the support of his fellows addressed to them and claimed loudly :

- “ We have to rebel!”

The Old cedar nodded. He disapproved :

The young disobedient cedar did not move. All the young cedars of the forest kept on wanderng around and did not really pay much attention to what was going on.

- Young “Bouncy” pursued : “ We have to react. We have to survive long black winters. How shall we manage to do that? Staying passive and obedient is not a way “.

Down in the village, the closed windows and the shut doors in the houses were a premonitoire sign it would snow. The ice carried by the storm and the frost were messengers. The inhabitants had to barricade themselves and desert the wooded hills, where the cold saws your bones and hollows your skin. The cedars are never ready enough.

Suddenly, the storm broke out. Violent and furious lightning sparked, and thunder echoed in the steep environment. The wind rang by the cedars’ ear! The blue skies were tore, in two halves, and in the nest and branches behind the foliage, the animals chanted melodies to keep faith. A hailstorm started poring ice pearls. Gloomy and mysterious squalls took over: the damp earth was covered with a coat sewed in white string.

In the forest, all the disobedient cedars to the conventional laws of nature surpassed themselves and hurried overgrowing. The wind yielded to them, and they rose up. They had in mind a pace of their own to face the fury of nature. They became tall, stretched up to their tips. When they felt that they had reached the abnormal gigantic size, they aimed at, they were out of breath. Finally, they were huge and so big!

The Old cedar stood miserable and lonely on the hill; he was hit by the thunder. His roots were wide and tangled, bending over, and twisted together. His trunk was pound and crushed, opened to his heart. He lost the battle

Suddenly, as if by magic, peace came back and invaded the forest. The storm had passed. The clouds cleared the skies just above the Deceitful cedar. There was a limpid blue gap in the sky with an opening to the Upper World. The Cedar stood proudly under it.

- “ How did you make it? “ asked the wind.
- “ I fought for survival, and was determined to hold on,” answered the deceitful cedar, self-confident.
- “ Am I glad you’re still here” added a foggy cloud.
- “ I have great talent and determination. There’s nothing wrong with that. Yet I could not convince and carry along, all the trees with me” replied again the Deceitful cedar with an underlying sadness.

The forest had survived to the storm, but the forest was sad. The incident that occurred led to the tragic death of its Old cedar tree. The elder trees held urgently and anxiously their Magic Council, to decide whether the Deceitful cedar could be allowed to remain in the community, up in the mountains. The Magic Council was puzzled. The forest was now safe and sound, but anarchy could not prevail, nor gain influence. Harmony and solidarity should be maintained in the forest. Too many cedars were respectfully fascinated by the rebellion of the Disobedient cedar, and were wondering who was he!!! He had fought back the thunder and the skies heavy weather. He had challenged forcefully and successfully the Laws of Old Mother Nature. The Magic Council felt facts should be faced. Old rules and conventions of the forest should be wisely bent, and even revised . New norms have to be established …The Disobedient cedar could become a new leader for the benefit and well-being of the forest.

- “ Life has to go on serenely in the forest. After deep and wise meditation the verdict is favorable for the Disobedient cedar. He is our new hero. He stays with us and will comply to our new community rules”
- declared the Magic council

Up in the mountains, the sun, the skies, the clouds and the wind blessed all the disobedient cedars. All the trees were reconciled and regained faith for the days to come. Henceforth, they were determined to remain strongly united and brave all dangers to safeguard their forest. The Old cedar will certainly stay engraved on their memory for ever.

The end.
